Alice Munro Writers & Readers Festival

Submissions for 2013 Alice Short Story Contest now open

Writers of short fiction are invited to enter the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival’s 2013 Short Story Competition. The Festival activities will also include opportunities for writers to read their works as well as a gala awards event and a walking tour of Wingham, with a focus on the life of Alice Munro as she grew up in the area.  

Guest speakers are being confirmed and complete information will be available on the festival website, outlining the weekend events starting Friday, September 27 until Sunday, September 29, 2013. 

Monetary prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners in both adult and teen categories.  Selected authors will be invited to read from their entries at a Gala Event during the 2013 Festival Weekend, September 27 – 29, 2013.  Winners will be celebrated at the Gala event on Saturday, September 28 in Wingham, Ontario, home of the first Festival and short story competition created by the volunteers of the local Horticultural Society.

Deadline: August 1, 2013. 

Fee: $25 per entry for adults; $10 per entry for teen category.

The Malahat Review

Established in 1967 and published out of the University of Victoria, The Malahat Review is arguably Canada's most prestigious literary journal. It publishes poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction by new and established writers from Canada and abroad as well as reviews of Canadian books.

Unsolicited poetry submissions should consist of five to ten poems on any subject and in any style. The magazine will often accept several poems by the same author; therefore, please do not limit your submission to a single poem.

Unsolicited submissions of short fiction may range in length from 1,200 to 8,000 words.

Unsolicited submissions of creative nonfiction may range in length from 1,000 to 3,500 words. No restrictions as to subject matter or approach apply. For example, a submission may be personal essay, memoir, cultural criticism, nature writing, or literary journalism.

Creative Nonfiction Contest

The Malahat Review is accepting entries for the Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize. Open — but not limited — to personal essay, memoir, narrative nonfiction, social commentary, historical accounts, and biography.

First prize: $1,000. Length: 2,000 – 3,000 words. Entry fee: $35 (includes subscription).
