Two paying markets, for literary works and food stories, and a free poetry contest

Online quarterly The Puritan (Toronto) seeks fiction, poetry, reviews, literary essays, and interviews for Issue XXII: Summer 2013. “Submissions may push toward the symbolic frontier, challenging limitations and forging into previously unexplored aesthetic territory.” 
Payment: $40 – $50 for prose and $15 for poetry.

New Canadian literary food quarterly Beer and Butter Tarts seeks short fiction, essays, and profiles for their first issue to be published in December 2013. They’re also interested in artwork, comic, beautiful food photography, and will even consider poetry. Submissions must be food-related and Canadian in topic and timeless. No recipes, events, or restaurant news.

“Still not sure what we’re looking for? Things like the history of the Halifax donair, the near loss of Canadian red fife wheat, a primer on Asian condiments (what’s the difference between Vietnamese fish sauce and Thai fish sauce?), or personal stories about food and life (such as you’ll find in our fine publication Kitchen Party) would all work, along with the more general food stories and essays you might find in any current food journals.”

Payment: A free copy and a small stipend (to be announced). 
Deadline: June 30, 2013.
