The South Circular

Published out of Ireland, The South Circular is a quarterly e-journal of short stories designed to be portable and downloaded directly to your reading device. Some of the best ways to enjoy The South Circular is on a bus, waiting for the dentist or even on the loo!

Original Home Magazine, launched on Apple's Newsstand in November, is all about enjoying yourself at home – and we are looking for writers!  

We cover food, decor, collections, gardening, home entertaining, and unique destinations.  We are actively looking for contributors in all those areas - but, we're also very excited to add a monthly piece of short fiction (up to 2,500 words) beginning with our February edition.

To get an idea of our style and audience, writers can check out our publication here.  

The magazine app is free to download, our Christmas issue is free to everyone, and you can preview our regular editions as well.  While we are currently English-language only on Newsstand, that will be changing soon as we go to a bilingual format and expand to Android and other platforms in the new year.

Payment is currently an honorarium and subscription, but, we also offer profit-sharing through Apple's Affiliate Program and we will be growing contributor compensation as we grow.

The New Quarterly is a beautiful literary journal and sponsors three annual contests – for verse, for essays and for short fiction. They’re excellent contests if you’d like to subscribe to the New Quarterly. Otherwise, the $40 entry fee is a bit stiff. But they also accept regular submissions, and if they publish one of your stories, they pay $250. Check out the submissions page here.

The New Quarterly contests:

The Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest: We will award a grand prize of $1,000 for one glorious poem. Another $1,000 in prize money will be distributed as the judges fancy. However the prize money falls, the best of what we see will be published in The New Quarterly, at our usual rates ($40/poem).

Entry fee: $40 for up to 2 unpublished poems, $5 each for additional poems. Submissions include a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly and may be accompanied by a brief paragraph describing the event that occasioned the poem. Deadline: February 28, 2014

Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest: $1,000 for one winning essay
We are interested in essays of any length, on any topic, in which the writer's personal engagement with the topic provides the frame or through-line. There is no restriction on essay length or subject matter, but the author must be a Canadian citizen or resident. All essays considered for publication at our usual rates ($250/essay).

Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly
Deadline: March 28, 2014

The Peter Hinchcliffe Fiction Award:  The $1,000 top prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction by a Canadian (citizen or resident) writer who has not yet published a first novel or short story collection. Though there is only one top prize, all submissions will be considered for paid publication ($250) in the magazine. All submissions will be judged blind.

Entry fee: $40 per submission. Each submission includes a one-year Canadian subscription (or subscription extension) to The New Quarterly

Deadline: May 28, 2014.
