Up in Smoke, a new Dr. Zol Szabo novel by Ross Pennie

Great news: My latest medical mystery, Up in Smoke, is now launched. We had an excellent celebration of the launch on October 16 at the Ancaster Old Town Hall: 130 attendees and sold all the books we had. My son Fraser (age 25) interviewed me in a Stroumboulopoulos format, which was a bit hit. Today, I sold books in the front lobby of Brantford General Hospital, and again sold out. That's 230 copies sold in the first week! Not bad.

Suspense and corruption light up the third Dr. Zol Szabo offering

Epidemic investiga tor Dr. Zol Szabo and his team are called to a panic-stricken high school in the heart of Ontario’s tobacco country, where teens are dying from liver failure. The team suspects a link with contaminated, cut-price cigarettes manufactured on nearby Grand Basin Indian Reserve. When Zol confronts The Badger, the multi-millionaire kingpin of the illicit Native tobacco trade, he is ordered to shut down his investigation. The Badger’s contaminated tobacco spreads across the country, and key witnesses and Zol’s family are put in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal. Can Zol dig deep enough to find a creative solution before it’s too late?

Ross is also the author of two previous Dr. Zol Szabo mysteries, Tainted and Tampered, and of The Unforgiving Tides, a doctor’s memoir of Papua New Guinea (Manor House Publishing).
