The Rights Factory  deals in intellectual property rights for entertainment products, including books, comics & graphic novels, film, television, and video games. As an international agency, TRF licenses rights in every territory. TRF works directly with publishers, producers, studios, game developers and other rights-buyers in all territories, occasionally in conjunction with local representatives.  

It’s a young agency, with half a dozen agents actively looking for authors, including two new literary agents: Cassandra Rodgers, who has been promoted from Agency Assistant to Associate Agent, and Lydia Moëd, who has joined The Rights Factory as an Associate Agent. Neither has their information listed on The Rights Factory website yet, but they’ve sent me emails outlining what they’re looking for.

I’ve also included updates about two other agents at the Rights Factory who are actively looking for new authors: Ali McDonald, who specializes in books for young people, ranging from picture books to young adults, and Olga Filina, who represents fiction and nonfiction for adults and also middle grade and young adult fiction….

Cassandra Rodgers

Hi, Brian.

I am actively working on building my list.  My focus is on adult commercial and literary fiction – especially manuscripts with an emphasis on relationships and family.  I love historical fiction and would also look at a good thriller or mystery.  I am not particularly interested in science fiction but another agent here loves it (Lydia Moëd, see below).

I also have a couple of clients with non-fiction books – one a memoir and another an academic political book.  So I am generally interested in a wide range of genres with a focus on the adult market.  As you know, our YA department is very well covered by Ali and Olga! (More on Ali and Olga below.)

I would prefer to be queried with just a good pitch, synopsis, and bio.  If I am interested, I will generally ask for the entire manuscript or as much of it that has been completed.

Lydia Moëd

Hi, Brian.

I'm focusing on science fiction and fantasy, but I'm also interested in magic realism (in the broader sense of the term) and even historical fiction – basically anything but the here-and-now! I'm definitely interested in both YA and adult fiction, and open to Middle Grade if it's something that really catches my interest. 

I love reading about characters from underrepresented groups (or characters who are marginalised in science-fiction and fantasy universes). I'm drawn to unusual historical settings and I love books inspired by magic and folklore from around the world.

Ali McDonald specializes in children's literature of all kinds, ranging from novelty board books, picture books, early readers, and chapter books, to middle grade and young adult fiction and nonfiction. She enjoys working primarily with debut authors, but also has the distinguished pleasure of co-representing big stars of Canadian literature, including Mariko Tamaki and David Glimour, in their kidlit works. 

Ali is open to anything, building her list on strong voices with original stories. Many Quick Brown Fox readers will be familiar with Ali from when she`s been a guest speaker at Brian Henry's workshops.

Olga Filina is fairly new to the agenting business. A graduate of Humber’s Creative Book Publishing Program, Olga spent over a decade as a sales manager and book buyer for both national and independent book store chains and two years as a literary assistant at The Cooke Agency.

While Olga will read anything that may set her book clubs on fire, she gravitates towards commercial and historical fiction, great genre fiction in the area of romance and mystery, nonfiction in the field of business, wellness, lifestyle and memoir and young adult and middle grade novels with memorable characters. In her spare time, Olga sits on library boards, organizes literary festivals and runs more book clubs than she can count.

Carly Watters

Brian Henry will lead a “How to Get Published” workshop in Oakville on Sept 27 with literary agent Carly Watters (see here).
