Boulevard has been called one of the half-dozen best literary journals. Boulevard strives to publish only the finest in fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. “While we frequently publish writers with previous credits, we are very interested in less experienced or unpublished writers with exceptional promise. If you have practiced your craft and your work is the best it can be, send it to Boulevard.”

Fiction: We accept fiction works up to 8,000 words. We do not accept science fiction, erotica, westerns, horror, romance, or children's stories.

Nonfiction: (Essays, interviews, etc.): We accept nonfiction works up to 8,000 words.

Payment: Minimum payment for prose is $100, maximum is $300

For prose, electronic submissions only.

Poetry: Submit no more than five poems at a time. We accept poems of up to 200 lines. We do not accept light verse. 

Payment: Minimum payment for poetry is $25, maximum is $250

Black Warrior Review is named after the river that borders the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The city, river, and journal derive their names from the sixteenth-century Indian chief Tuscaloosa, whose name comes from two words of Creek or Choctaw origin—tusca (warrior) and lusa (black). Established in 1974 by graduate students in the MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Alabama, Black Warrior Review publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and art

Submissions: The editors of BWR read regular Poetry, Prose, and Nonfiction submissions from December 1 – March  1 and June 1-September 1.

Prose: We seek risk-taking prose that challenges conventions of narrative, language, and form. We value invention and innovation, work that strikes and burns, difference executed with confidence. Absurdity, hybridity, the magical, the stark—make us see and see again. We ask that prose works are no longer than 7000 words. We also accept flash fiction (under 1,000 words); please include no more than three flash pieces in a single submission.”

Poetry: We are seeking a combustible poetry that puts pressure on the relationship between form and content.  We are seeking a poetry of excitement that changes its state of matter from read to read. We are seeking most a poetry we read and walk away from changed.

Please send up to five poems, with a maximum submission length of 10 pages. Poems should be submitted in one document, with the titles separated by commas in the “Submission Title” field. You may abbreviate the titles if they do not fit.

Nonfiction: We at BWR seek nonfiction that takes pleasure in confusing boundaries, but also takes responsibility for constructing them. We appreciate nonfiction that refrains from pulling us along for a direct purpose, but rather suspends us in moments of both utter disbelief, and the etching out of how we come to believe; when the associative meanders a territory of meaning, rather than simply wanders without specific purpose.

We ask that nonfiction works are no longer than 7000 words. Please query for longer works. We do not usually accept academic articles.

Graphic Prose: Although we usually solicit one featured artist per issue, we do welcome submissions of striking visual narratives (think: graphic novel or memoir in short form) — don’t let us overlook you. We are looking to publish one or two graphic prose essays, stories or pieces of sequential art per issue.  For this type of submission, we request that you submit in .jpg, .tiff or .pdf format.

Payment: BWR pays a one-year subscription and a nominal lump-sum fee for all works published.
