Small
independent journal The
Quilliad (Toronto) seeks flash fiction, short
stories, poetry, comics, photography, and art from Canadian writers and
artists. Looking for literary science fiction and horror; magic realism; fairy
tales, folk tales, myths, and legends; monsters, death, magic, and fear. Submit
1-5 pieces.
Biennial
journal JONAHmagazine (Canada) seeks submissions for its next
issue: poetry, prose, true stories, lies, memoir. Likes: “Journeys, in space,
in time, in the heart, or in the mind. Beginnings, endings, triumph and loss,
odysseys of the soul. Fish stories, BIG fish stories. Stories that come from
the soul, or steal it.” Length: 2500 words max; up to 3 poems. Welcomes
international submissions.
A 50-word
story is a piece of fiction written in exactly 50 words. That doesn’t mean
“roughly” 50 words; it doesn’t mean “as close to 50 words as possible”; it
doesn’t mean 50 words or fewer. It means exactly 50 words.
As with any
other form of fiction, a 50-word story should have a beginning and an
end, a plot and character development (even if they are only implied), and
a theme, meaning, or purpose of some sort. Many 50-word stories are built
around twists or climactic moments.
Right now, 50WS posts two
reader-submitted stories every weekday. To submit your stories for
possible publication, see the Submissions page. A $10 prize is available for the best
submission each month: see the Top Stories page for more information.
Mamalode is a print magazine and a website, and it pays for feature
essays. (Read a great example by Shannon Day here).
Here’s
what Mamlode has to say about themselves: Our
readers and writers are moms – with a smattering of dads, kids, grandparents,
aunts, uncles and friends. They become Mamaloders because we give them
something nobody else does – the truth and each other.
Submissions: Only submissions that reflect our mission (to create
connections) will be considered. No how-to or political stories are accepted.
We don’t lean left or right, just on each other.
Essays for the website should be between 300-600 words, under 1500 for print.
Mamalode pays the for feature essays only: Unique views are tracked and recorded for 30 days after the piece goes live. Payments are based on unique views. Your piece is promoted on Mamalode's social media platforms and they expect you to promote your own pieces to drive traffic.
