Dystel & Goderich was founded in 1994 by Jane Dystel, who has been in publishing for over 30 years. The agency prides itself on taking query letters from unknown writers very seriously. “As a matter of fact,” says Jane Dystel, “we have discovered many of our most talented authors in the slush pile. We read everything that is sent to us, whether we decide to represent it or not.”

Michael Hoogland is the newest member of the team and like all new agents, he needs authors. He comes to Dystel & Goderich after completing a foreign rights internship at Sterling Lord Mike studied at Colgate University and after graduating with a degree in political science, interned with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, but soon realized he was better suited to a career in publishing. Mike furthered his career at the Columbia Publishing course and discovered his passion for the agenting side of the business. He Tweets here.

Mike is looking for thrillers (especially domestic), sci-fi/fantasy, YA, and upmarket women’s fiction. He is also seeking a wide array of narrative nonfiction.

Brian Henry will lead Writing for Children & for Young Adults workshops on Saturday, April 2, in Barrie, with literary agent Rachel Letofsky (see here), on Saturday, April 30, in Guelph, with Yasemin Uçar, senior editor, Kids Can Press and authors Jennifer Mook-Sang and Kira Vermond (see here), and Sunday, May 29, in Ottawa with acclaimed author Alan Cumyn (see here).
