“Writing Class,” a closing poem by Larry Davies

This past Christmas was normal, except for one gift
My daughter was thinking, Dad might need a lift
So she went looking for ideas she might wrap in a box
And found a writing site called “the quick brown fox”

I’d written some poems in the past on topics quite wide
But actually writing a good story - I’d never even tried
So I thought, after pouring some wine – okay, four glasses
“What can be so hard about signing up for some classes?”

I showed up the first day and was in for a surprise
When I found myself staring into fourteen female eyes
We all got a nickname so we would know who was who
“Dazzling” and “Lively” and “Happy” to name but a few

Each week had a new topic and subject to write
We learned from each other – it was like love at first sight
We talked about our upbringing, first failure and bread
Against these quality writers I was at first filled with dread

With each week we got better and learned a lot more
I looked forward each time to see what was in store
Brian made sure that we were stretched and we shared
We learned about speed dating and about a mom who cared

I was sorry to miss two weeks because of travel
Surely there were more stories about to unravel
Would the perfect office assistant -  or Lori prevail?
Has anyone been published in the Globe and Mail?

As we wrap up today and go our separate ways
I say thanks to all for our special writing days
Each time I eat bread or go on a speed date – not!
You’ll each be remembered and never be forgot
