 This course is for adults {or teens} interested in writing Board Books, Picture Books, Chapter Books, or Middle Grade books. Accessible for beginners and meaty enough for advanced writers, this course will be focussed on helping you develop your own writing projects. Through lectures, in-class assignments, homework, and feedback on your writing, we’ll give you ins and outs of writing for younger readers and set you on course toward writing books kids will love and parents will buy.

We’ll have two published children’s authors as guest speakers:

Lana Button grew up in the tiny border town of St. Stephen, New Brunswick. She has a background in acting and is an early childhood educator. Today Lana writes for young children and reads out loud to crowds of kids whenever she gets the chance. She has six published picture books, with Kids Can Press, Owlkids, and Tundra, including her latest, Tough Like Mum (see here). Lana is excited for two more coming in 2021/22.

Lana’s picture books have been shortlisted for awards including The Blue Spruce, The Shining Willow, the Jean Throop IODE Award and the Rainforest of Reading, and have been recognized as Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s Best Bets and the IBBY Outstanding Book for Young Children.

Erin Silver is a children’s author and freelance writer. Her middle grade novel, Just Watch Me, won a publishing contract with Common Deer Press and was nominated for a Crystal Kite award. 

What Kids Did: Stories of Kindness and Invention in the Time of COVID-19 (Second Story Press) is a picture book about the amazing ways kids around the world helped during the pandemic. It was shortlisted for a Hackmatack Award. 

Proud to Play: Canadian LGBTQ+ athletes who made history was chosen as a TD Book Week pick and was featured across CBS platforms during Pride Month. More books for kids are on the way.  

Erin’s journalism work has appeared in Good Housekeeping, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Today's Parent, Chatelaine, and The Washington Post, among others. She has a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from King's College in Halifax, a postgraduate journalism degree from Ryerson University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. She's a member of IBBY, The Writers Union of Canada, CANSCAIP and SCBWI. Instructor Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years.
