The Sterling Lord Agency was founded in 1952 and counted Jack Kerouac and Ken Kesey among his early clients. Peter Matson founded his firm, Literistic, in 1979 and rose to prominence representing such writers as John Irving and Dee Brown. In 1987, the two agencies joined forces to create Sterling Lord Literistic. The agency now has 14 agents accepting submissions, including two associate agents, Chris Combemale and Nell Pierce. Like all new agents, they particularly need authors:

Chris Combemale joined Sterling Lord Literistic in 2019 and works with Chairman Peter Matson and Senior Agent Robert Guinsler.

Chris is looking for a broad range of literary fiction and commercial fiction with an unexpected hook, from psychological suspense to speculative and fantasy.

In nonfiction he is interested in memoir, essay, and expert-driven projects across subject areas with special attention to technology, food, pop-science, economics, and any book that asks big questions about forces of change.

As a Singaporean/French/American born and raised in London, Chris is drawn to international voices and writers in translation. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain Scholar and now lives in Brooklyn.

Query Chris through the agency’s submission page here.

Nell Pierce joined Sterling Lord Literistic in 2016 and works with President Philippa Brophy and Senior Editor Jim Rutman.

Nell is looking for literary and commercial fiction, narrative nonfiction, character-driven young adult novels, and books about language and linguistics.

Originally from Australia, Nell holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne and an MFA in Fiction from The New School in New York.

Query Nell through the agency’s submission page here.

If you’re interested in meeting an agent and in getting published, don’t miss our online How to Get Published workshop Saturday, Aug 14, with literary agent Gordon Warnock of Fuse Literary (see here).
