One Story publishes one great story at a time. Stories must be between 3,000 and 8,000 words. Pays $500 U.S. plus 25 contributor copies.

Reading periods: Jan15 – May 31 and Oct 4 – Nov 14. Guidelines here.

One Story also publishes One Teen Story, which gives teen writers a chance to be edited, published, and paid for their work.  Stories that appear in One Teen Story are chosen in a free writing contest. The contest is free and open to all writers ages 13-19. 

Three winners are chosen, and three stories are published each year. These stories are mailed to the 10,000+ One Story subscribers as a part of their subscription. Contest winners each receive $500 U.S. and 25 copies of the magazine featuring their work.

The Niagara Branch of the Canadian Authors Association invites entries to its 37th Bannister Annual Poetry Competition

Eligibility: Residents of Ontario only

Awards: Three prizes - $300, $200, and $100, plus publication in The Banister.

Entry fee: $15 for three poems.

Wanted: compact, powerful short stories of 1,000 words or less

 Our 14th annual Flash Fiction Contest is now open! First prize: $1,000. Second: $100. Four additional cash awards. All six winners will be published online in our October issue. The entry fee is $7 and the deadline is August 31. Any topic, any style. 1,000 words max.

We are happy to have paid writers more than $40,000 over the years.

General submissions (no fee to submit) remain open year-round for short fiction, poetry, and visual art. We pay $20 for each general submission that we publish.

50-Word Stories: A 50-word story is a piece of fiction written in exactly 50 words. That doesn’t mean “roughly” 50 words; it doesn’t mean “as close to 50 words as possible”; it doesn’t mean 50 words or fewer. It means exactly 50 words.

As with any other form of fiction, a 50-word story should have a beginning and an end, a plot and character development (even if they are only implied), and a theme, meaning, or purpose of some sort. Many 50-word stories are built around twists or climactic moments.

Right now, 50WS posts two reader-submitted stories every weekday. Submissions are accepted the 1st to the 15th of each month. Quick Brown Fox welcomes your book reviews and your short stories, poems, and essays about reading, writing, favourite books, and libraries. Read a few essays on the blog to get a taste of what other writers have done (see here and scroll down).

Quick Brown Fox also welcomes reviews of any kind and of anything, anywhere or anybody. If you want to review your favourite coffee shops or libraries, babysitters or lovers (no real names please), go for it.
