McClelland & Stewart is an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada. Formerly an independent company, it’s been around for 100 years and has published many of Canada’s best-known authors.

McClelland & Stewart is open to submissions of literary fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction March 1 through March 31 and will again be open for submissions September 1 through September 30. Outside these two months, M&S accepts submissions only through literary agents.

Ficti0n and nonfiction manuscripts have no strict length requirements, but 80,000 to 100,000 words would be typical. For poetry 7,000–10,000 words is ideal (about 70 pages and up).

Submit to: mcclellandsubmissions@penguinrandomhouse.com

For fiction and poetry, attach your full manuscript as a doc file (e.g. a Word document) or as a PDF.

For nonfiction, attach a preliminary chapter list with a short one to two sentence blurb about each chapter to give us a sense of how you plan to address your topic, along with a writing sample.

Full submission guidelines here.
