Kudos to Marianne and Wendy on their book contracts and to Natalie and Dana for placing in contests and getting their short pieces published!

If you’ve had a story (or a book!) published, if you’ve won or placed in a writing contest, if you’ve gotten yourself an agent, or if you have any other news, send me an email so I can share your success. As writers, we’re all in this together, and your good news gives us all a boost.

Also, be sure to let know if you're looking for a writers' group or beta readers; a notice in Quick Brown Fox, will help you find them.

Hi, Brian.

Good news! The announcement appeared in Quill and Quire:

Dundurn Press has acquired the rights to Marianne Miller’s debut novel, The Prisoners’ Tale. The novel, set in 1923, tells the story of bank robber Red Ryan’s escape from Kingston Penitentiary and a young, aspiring writer, Ernest Hemingway, who is sent to report on the story by The Toronto Daily Star. The two men share an unlikely bond as they struggle with the lives they are leading compared to the lives they want. Publication in 2024.

All the best,

Marianne Miller

Hi, Brian.

I'm happy to let you know that my short story "Sorrow's Own Aria" has won honourable mention for fiction in the Askew’s Word On the Lake Writing Contest! It will be published in their 2023 Anthology coming out in May. It's a story about an undertaker who's held on to a secret for forty years, and I was inspired to write it in your creative writing class. I’m so thrilled as this will be my first piece published.

Thank you, Brian!

Cheers,

Natalie J. Chan

Askew’s Word on the Lake Writing Contest is an annual competition. Natalie read about it in the Canadian Writers’ Contest Calendar (see here).

Hi, Brian.

I’m happy to announce I’ve signed a contract with Winged Publications (Arizona) to publish my psychological thriller/ romance, Dead Serious.  Dates and details TBA.

Since you helped revise my query and looked at the first chapter, I think you can assume some of the credit!  I also gained much confidence in your creative writing course last fall. I started this novel as a lark about twelve years ago and shelved it while I self-published two YA novels. The pandemic gave me time to finish this one.

Sincerely,

Wendy Truscott
