Red Deer Press wants Kid Lit, Picture Books to YA, plus short stories for YA anthology

Red Deer Press is always looking for quality writing for children across all ages, from picture books to young adult fiction and nonfiction.

Right now, Red Deer also looking for pieces for a young adult short story anthology titled I’m Here for publication in the fall of 2025. Submissions are invited from writers from across Canada and from both we encourage submissions from both established and emerging authors

Pays a one-time fee of $250.

Story Criteria:

Under 4000 words

Any genre (realistic fiction, speculative fiction, historical fiction, etc.) but created for contemporary teen readers

Connected in some way to the theme of “identity”

Authored by a writer living in Canada

Submission Process:

Submit the entire story, along with a query letter that includes a brief summary of how the story connects to this theme plus an author bio of 100 words or less

Send your submission by regular mail, with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with sufficient Canadian postage for reply (plus author email, if possible) to the following address:

Full manuscript submissions

For picture books submit entire text. No original art will be accepted.

For fiction, submit query letter and three sample chapters.

For nonfiction, submit query letter with outline.

Multiple submissions are acceptable but will not receive priority.

Art submissions:

Send samples, along with an illustrator bio and a website address if available

Do not send original art, hand-bound books or other bulky submissions or anything that needs to be returned
