The Donald Maass Literary Agency in New York City is a well-known literary agency for professional novelists. In addition to being an agent, Donald Mass is the author of "Writing the Breakout Novel" and other books for writers.

The Donald Maass Literary Agency specializes in commercial fiction but also represents literary fiction with commercial potential. "All genres are welcome. We handle many authors of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, suspense, horror, romance, historical, literary and mainstream novels.”

Do they work with previously unpublished writers? "Yes, all the time."

Caitlin McDonald is the newest member of the team, and like all new agents, she needs authors. Caitlin comes to Donald Maass from Sterling Lord Literistic, where she began her career as an agent last year. Caitlin grew up overseas and has a BA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. She tweets here.

Caitlin represents adult and young adult speculative fiction, primarily science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and related subgenres, as well as contemporary fiction about geeky characters. She also handles a small amount of nonfiction in geeky areas, with a focus on feminist theory/women’s issues and pop culture.

She is seeking:

– All science fiction and fantasy fiction (and subgenres) for adult, YA, and MG, especially secondary world fantasy and alternate history
– Genre-bending or cross-genre fiction, and stories that examine tropes from a new angle
– Diversity of all kinds, including (but not limited to) race, gender, sexuality, and ability, in both characters and world-building

Do not send:
– women’s fiction
– crime fiction
– picture books or chapter books
– screenplays or short stories
