Markets and contests for your short stories, essays, reviews, and poetry

Writers’ Playground is inviting participants to take part in its short story competition. You must register by July 7, 2021. Then you’ll have 10 days, July 8 – July 18 to write a short story using one of five possible settings, characters, and things. $20 entry fee; $2,000 in prizes. All participants will receive feedback on their entry.

Arc Poetry Magazine accepts submissions of previously unpublished poetry in English, or translations of poetry into English on any subject, in any form. Pays $50 per page.

Arc also publishes essays, interviews, and articles on poetry.

Reading periods: April 1 – July 31 for Winter issue; September 1 – March 31 for summer issue. Guidelines here.

 

VirginiaQuarterly Review {VQR} publishes short fiction 3,500–8,000 words and pays $1,000+; poetry of all types and lengths, pays $200 per poem; nonfiction including literary, art and cultural criticism,  personal essays, reportage, historical and political analysis, and travel essays 3,500–9,000 words, pays 25 cents / word, more for investigative journalism; and book reviews 2,000–2,400 words, pays $50.

For online content, VQR pays $100 – $200, depending on length and content.

Partnering with The Halton Chapter of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, {CARP}, I have received New Horizons funding to put together a community book project.
Submission Details:
Anyone 55 and over living in Halton or Hamilton can submit.
As this is a community project, please no inappropriate content or language.

Deadline: August 31, 2021

Theme: “In these dark times, it's those small acts of kindness that keep us alive, after all. They remind us of our humanity" - R.J. Palacio

It's been a tough year, a year like no other, but in all the difficulties and restrictions, the loneliness and the frustrations there have been acts of kindness and moments of light that helped eased the hardships.

In this anthology we want to focus on the positives that came out of a difficult year; insights realized, kindness given or received, things you did to maintain inner peace and hope.
Poetry ; Submit 1, 2 or 3 short poems or one long one.

Fiction or Nonfiction work: Limit one piece, max 12,00 words. Must be 12 size Times New Roman font, 1.5 spacing.

Photography/Art Work: Submit 1, 2 or 3 pieces

If your piece is accepted, you will be need to sign a release form allowing me to publish your submission. You are granting one-time rights to your work. The rights to your work belong to you. You will receive one complimentary copy of the book.

Pure Slush books is looking for submissions to its upcoming anthology: Submissions for Love Lifespan Vol. 4 are NOW OPEN.

Submissions will close 31st August 2021.

Through 2021, 2022 and into 2023, Pure Slush is planning a 12-volume anthology series, looking across the Lifespan.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute works taking characters across the arc of their whole lives, whether prose or poetry, fiction or nonfiction.

Or alternately, to create unlinked works. Submit to one … or a few … or many … or all.

Your Love submission must be:

  • original, so previously unpublished online or in print (so that includes authors’ websites and blogs)
  • 150 word minimum limit for fiction and non-fiction, stories and essays / maximum 1000 words
  • 80 word minimum limit for poetry / maximum 1000 words. (That’s for each poem: maximum number of poems you can submit is 5.)
  • must include something about love … which means the characters can be any age.

Quick Brown Fox Quick Brown Fox welcomes your book reviews and your short stories, poems, and essays about reading, writing, favourite books, and libraries. Read a few essays on the blog to get a taste of what other writers have done (see here and scroll down).

Quick Brown Fox also welcomes reviews of any kind and of anything, anywhere or anybody. If you want to review your favourite coffee shops or libraries, babysitters or lovers (no real names please), go for it.
