Congratulations to Alyson, Melanie, Christine, and Karen!

If you’ve had a story (or a book!) published, if you’ve won or placed in a writing contest, if you’ve gotten yourself an agent, or if you have any other news, send me an email so I can share your success. And be sure to let know if you're looking for a writers' group or beta readers; a notice in Quick Brown Fox, will help you find them.

Dear Brian,

I’m so pleased to be in touch with you and I hope this email finds you healthy and faring well.

I’m writing to let you know that The Parasol Flower has been named a finalist in the Fiction category of the 28th Annual Hamilton Literary Awards. You’ve been a supporter of mine in the past, and I’m grateful to be able to share this happy news with you!

A broadcast of readings by all of the category finalists (including my own cringeworthy, single-take performance) will go live on December 16 when they will also announce the winners. Fingers crossed! For more information and the viewing link and to see all the participating books/authors go to: https://www.hamiltonartscouncil.ca/literary-awards

I encourage you to let other book-lovers know about the event and the books, and to keep in mind The Parasol Flower as a nice Christmas prezzie for someone ;) More about the book and its reception here: https://www.theartofwriting.ca/the-parasol-flower

As always, if you have the time to leave a brief review or score on Goodreads or Amazon, or to ask your local public library to stock a copy, please know such efforts are so valuable for indie press authors like myself whose works go mostly unmarketed.

Merry Christmas!

Update: And Karen has won the Hamilton Literary Award  yay, Karen!

Hi, Brian.

I’d like to order a copy of the 2022 Canadian Writers Contest Calendar — hope you’re selling them again this year.

Also I should have let you know this a while back. I was pleased to take first place in the fiction category of The North Shore Writers’ Association 2021 Annual Writing Competition back in April. I entered after finding the contest listed in the book!

Happy holidays!

Christine Langlois

I am indeed selling the Canadian Writers Contest Calendar again this year. Check out the details here.

Hi, Brian.

I hope you're staying safe and well.

I just wanted to let you know that one of my stories, "The Wolf You Feed," will appear in Tyche Books' Home for the Howlidays anthology.

Here's the publisher's page: https://tychebooks.com/howlidays

Best regards,

Hi, Brian.

– hope this note finds you well.

I recently won a writing contest for a short piece I submitted in the summer.  “What A Difference A Day Makes” is published on Prose Online.

I had written parts of this piece in much longer forms, the first section most certainly workshopped in your Intensive Writing Class.  I then pieced it together with a host of other longer scenes I’d written and pared it down to about 740 words.  I think I’m becoming a fan of the short form – fewer opportunities to screw up, I suppose, akin to answering a Jeopardy question with just a person’s last name, leaving me to option to screw up on the first name.

I’ve got another longer piece to be published later in the fall with a Christmas theme.  I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks again for all your support and direction, and pulling together such a marvelous community of writers and readers.

Take care, and stay safe – these are strange times still.

Cheers,

Alyson Soko
