Kudos to Shauna, Nancy, Nadja, and Beverley, plus beta readers wanted

If you’ve had a story (or a book!) published, if you’ve won or placed in a writing contest, if you’ve gotten yourself an agent, or if you have any other news, send me an email so I can share your success. As writers, we’re all in this together, and your good news gives us all a boost.

Also, be sure to let know if you're looking for a writers' group or beta readers; a notice in Quick Brown Fox, will help you find them.

Hi, Brian.

Thanks to you, your classes, and all the wonderful feedback from fellow writers on how to deepen my work, I’m excited to tell you that I’m now represented by Kristina Perez at Perez Literary out of London, UK.  Fingers crossed she finds a good home for my book soon.

Note: If you're interested in meeting an agent and getting published, join our upcoming How to Get Published workshop. See here.

Hi, Brian.

I’m thrilled to announce that my debut novel, Born an Islander, will be published by Acorn Press in Fall 2024/Spring 2025. Born an Islander is a multi-timeline novel that my agent, Alice Speilburg, pitched as inspired by Acadian folklore, in which an ocean-phobic detective evades the deadly lure of a phantom ship on the choppy coastline of Prince Edward Island by delving into her family’s history and harnessing her matrilineal powers of premonition.

You may remember that I brought chapters of this novel to your Intensive classes over the years (it used to be titled, Ancestral Echoes), and your instruction and feedback was key to its development. In particular, one of your comments unlocked an aspect of character development and plot that heightened the emotion and tension in my contemporary protagonist’s story. But it’s a spoiler, so I can’t tell readers of your newsletter any more than that.

Thanks for all your support!

Nancy Taber

Dear Brian,

CBC Radio and Helluva Story with Duncan McCue are airing my interview if you would like to have a listen. It is the interview which I originally did  in June, but in case you missed it, or would like to hear it again, here it is.

In only a couple of weeks, the war in Ukraine will reach its 1-year anniversary. Perhaps many might say "wow, has it already been a year?" because it seems to have passed so quickly, but to those living under siege and in the constant grip of fear a year feels like an eternity. Sadly, the parallels with Bosnia continue.

Wishing you peace & health,

Nadja Halibegovich

Good morning, Brian.

Just a little note to say that I won third prize in the Brucedale Press Acrostic Story Contest.  My story titled “You’ll Never Guess” will be published in their spring issue of The Leaf.

It’s been a couple of years that I have been submitting my acrostic stories to the yearly contest. I enjoy the challenge of having to write a story in only 26 sentences and using all the letters of the alphabet in order.  I first learned about this contest via the Canadian Writers Contest Calendar that I purchased from you for the past couple of years.

Thank you for your inspiration and encouragement via all the online courses I have taken from you.  I plan on taking more courses in the fall.  My spring schedule is very busy this year.

Kind regards,

Beverley Wilhelm
