Brian DeFiore started DeFiore and Company in 1999, after close to twenty years as an editor and an executive at several major publishing houses, including Random House, Hyperion, Dell Publishing and St. Martin's Press. Eight agents now work at DeFiore.

The newest addition (and hence the agent most in need of authors) is Meredith Kaffel. Meredith joined DeFiore and Company as an agent on March 19, 2012. She has been at the Charlotte Sheedy Agency for six years and will continue to represent books for children (including YA and middle grade) and for adults.

On the adult side, she is most interested in smart upmarket women's fiction, literary fiction (especially debut) and literary thrillers, narrative non-fiction focused on aesthetics (art, taste, music, design, etc) and also interdisciplinary history, war, love and relationships, as well as quirky platform-driven pop psychology and sociology, nonfiction about science, business, and tech, and sophisticated pop culture/humor books along the lines of The Hairpin, or else books which elegantly toe the highbrow/lowbrow line.

Meredith also represents a wide range of children's books, from the occasional picture book to the more frequent middle grade and young adult novel. As well, she is actively building her list of illustrators.

Prior to joining the publishing world, Meredith earned her B.A. in Renaissance Studies at Yale, where she focused primarily on Italian Renaissance art history and literature. You can follow Meredith on Twitter at twitter.com/mere215
