If zombies or Covid-19 take over Canada, then yes, my weekly creative writing courses will continue, but we may have to temporarily move online. We’re not there yet – and may never be – but it’s possible the epidemic could become pervasive in the general population and Public Health could advise against even small gatherings such as a writing class with just 14 people. Or before that, participants at my courses might get uneasy and elect to move online.
This doesn’t require any great technology, just a computer (or phone) with Internet access and a microphone – a camera would be a plus, but it’s not required (though I understand that all laptops, tablets, and smartphones come with camera installed).
My preference is always for face-to-face – and that’s how I hope to always run my courses. Otherwise, how would I ever get out of the house? But new circumstances require new ways of doing things, and if the situation calls it, we do have a contingency plan.
Update: Yikes – it seems the zombies are here already! I’ve officially moved my courses online for the spring. Same dates, same times, but no longer in Burlington, Georgetown, Oakville and Toronto. These courses will now be accessible from everywhere.
