CommuterLit, in partnership with Whistle Radio 102.7 fm in Stouffville has launched a monthly literary competition. The winning story or poem, chosen by CommuterLit’s editor Nancy Kay Clark, will be posted on CommuterLit and, on the same day, read on-air on Whistle Radio’s bi-weekly show, Off The Top. The show, hosted by CommuterLit contributor Charlene Jones, can also be listened to live through the internet and podcasts or the reading can be downloaded.

Deadline: Wednesday, May 17. Broadcast date: Tuesday, June 17.
Submission specs: Poems (or a series of poems) and short stories with a maximum word count of 2,800.

Funds raised through the small entry fee of $6.78 including applicable taxes, will go towards the costs of running CommuterLit.

Dear Brian,

Hope this message finds you well. We are Lorna and Laura, the Canadian founders and editors of Origami Journal, an online literary and photography journal. We publish quarterly and take pride in sharing stories and photography on a global scale, while giving new voices (and lenses!) an opportunity to gain exposure for their work.

We accept short stories, both fiction and non-fiction, that are unpublished and do not exceed 2,000 words. We accept all genres except children’s (including Young Adult) and erotica. Screenplays, plays, and poetry are not accepted.

We also accept original photography that has not been used elsewhere for publication. We’re open to pretty much anything that tweaks the imagination.

The deadline for the summer issue is May 21.

Call for entries: Glimmer Train, one of North America’s premier short story journals, accepts entries year round. Pays $700. Stories should be a maximum or 12,000 words. No minimum word count, but they prefer pieces over 500 words. Maximum three stories per author per month.

The Saving Bannister 30th Annual Poetry Contest

 The Niagara Branch of the Canadian Authors Association is holding its 30th Annual Poetry Anthology contest for residents of Ontario. Entries must be in English, previously unpublished and not submitted for consideration elsewhere. Number of entries is unlimited, but no more than six poems from one poet will be included in the anthology.

Entry fee: $15 for up to three poems and $4 for each additional poem

Prize: 1st prize: $200; 2nd prize: $100; 3rd prize $50

Canadian Immigrant magazine

If you are an immigrant in Canada, then Canadian Immigrant wants to hear from you. Canadian Immigrant’s aim is to “inform, educate, motivate and connect,” and they believe in learning from experience. If you have an interesting story to tell or want to write about issues and topics concerning immigrants, they invite you to contact them.

Each month, the Canadian Immigrant magazine and website include an immigrant “Success Story,” as well as other articles about immigrants in business, health, the arts and more.

They also publish first-person stories that give you a chance to write about your journey to Canada in your own words (600 words maximum). Want to sound off on immigration policy or news? Submit an editorial for the “Last Word” page (500 words maximum) or to the letters page.

Close to the Bone aims to bring you gritty and interesting short fiction across multiple genres from a range of talented writers. 

“We are looking for bank robberies gone bad, double-crossing bastards going at it, serial killers with a heart (maybe literally), redemption and revenge. We like it violent, thoughtful and well written. We will consider other genres such as western, science fiction and maybe fantasy, as long as they fit in with the grit theme we are looking for. Please take the time to edit— look over your story for spelling, grammar, and flow.  We want to publish you. If it’s good but needs work we’ll let you know, if you don’t like criticism and are happy to stay as you are, then don’t submit.  As we said, we like to publish you and will offer help with advice.”

Submit a well-written story of 3,000 words or less. Post the title of the story and the word count in the subject line. The story must be attached as a .doc or .docx — if submitted in any other fashion the story will not be considered. Also, please provide a short bio along with your submission.

Prime Number Magazine is a quarterly online journal that seeks to publish distinctive poetry and short fiction, regardless of theme, form, or style. 53-Word Story Contest: It's free, it's fun, and the winner gets published in Prime Number Magazine and receives a free book from Press 53. Stories must be exactly 53 words long. The Prime Number Magazine Flash Fiction Contest runs quarterly . The reading fee for entry is a low $7 (a prime number) per submission, with the following payouts for winners:
