Organizer Angie Gallop and Brian Henry |
On April 25, I led a "How to
Build Your Story" workshop in Thessalon (on the north short of Lake
Huron, a couple hours west of Sudbury). This was my second time up there, and I
hope to return often ~ they're a great group. Here's the report on their event,
which combined my workshop in the day with an author reading and music in the
evening, and the announcement of their annual short story contest . ~ Brian
We’re
still coming down from the high of our latest author event. Wasn't that a party?
First off,
we started with 24 people enjoying a very informative workshop with Brian
Henry. Brian’s workshops are always
filled to the brim with oodles of information for all levels of writers, from
plotting your novel, right through to what’s selling and how to attract agents.
Of course
we had a fab selection of morning treats to go with our delicious Looming
Deadline coffee, a blend created just for Stories in the North by St Joseph
Island Coffee Roasters … more

Algoma area writers, get your pens and keyboards ready – you’ve
got less than a month! Stories in the North, Thessalon’s home-baking literary
festival committee, has announced the details of their 3rd Annual
Short Story Contest.
For this year’s contest, writers will have to apply four of
the five following words to their story: flash,
secret, red, expletive, and frog.
Your story can be any length up to 5000 words and any genre
will be accepted.
As for who can enter, anyone living in the Algoma or
Manitoulin area for all or part of the year is eligible to enter.
There are two divisions: young writers, aged 18 and under;
or adults, aged 19 and over. First Prize in each category is $50.00, second is
$30.00 and third is $20.00.
