Note: If
you’ve had a story (or a book!) published, if
you’ve won or placed in a writing contest, if you’ve gotten yourself an agent,
or if you have any other news, send me an email so I can share your success. As
writers, we’re all in this together, and your good news gives us all a
boost.
Also,
be sure to let know if you're looking for a writers' group or beta readers; a
notice in Quick Brown Fox, will help you find them.

Good
morning, Brian.
If this picture looks a
little familiar it’s because a cropped version of it appears on the back cover
of We Were The Bullfighters. The original was taken in the bar at the Warwick
Hotel in NYC. The corner of 6th Avenue and 54th Street. Coincidentally, where
the Beatles stayed when they first came to North America, way back when.
As I mentioned in an
earlier email, We Were The Bullfighters was
nominated for the Best Crime First Novel by the Crime Writers of
Canada. It didn’t win but you know, if someone had told me when I was
sitting in that bar on 54th Street that I was soon going to have a book
published and that that book would be nominated for an award, I would have been
like – Really? Really! Far out! That’s incredible. And it has been incredible.
Thank you to all of you
who wonderful messages of support before and after the final decision was
announced. I also very much appreciated the media interest in me and the book.
And thank you to the Crime Writers of Canada for considering me, Ernie and the
convicts.
There are lots of
interesting events coming up. I am really looking forward to taking part
in the Book Clubs for Inmates Program. You can read more about it here:
http://www.bookclubsforinmates.com/
I have had the very
enjoyable experience attending a number of book clubs over the past year. It is
always lots of fun. People ask great questions and it’s interesting to hear
their reactions to the characters in the novel. If you think your book club might
be interested in reading We Were The
Bullfighters, please get in
touch. I am happy to appear in person or on Zoom. You can contact me and read
reviews at my website here.
Have a great week!

Hi,
Brian.
Thanks so much for your
and everyone else's inspiring and helpful guidance and feedback in your
classes. I've just signed a contract with Groundwood
Books for my bedtime story; it's due out in 2028.
Gratefully looking
forward,
Ellen
Michelson
P.S. Photos of me are
rare, so I'd be fine without, but in case you really want one, it's attached.
If possible, please credit Ann Caverly-thanks. (And yes, it's been a long time
since I was in one of your classes. They are wonderful.)
Note: Groundwood Books opens for submissions of kid
lit on August 1. Their parent imprint, House of Anansi Press, is always open
for submissions for books for adults. See here.
If you’re interested in Kid Lit, don’t miss our “Writing for Children and for Young Adults” workshops. We always have an editor from a children's publisher or a literary agent who specializes in Kid Lit as a guest speaker. See what's coming here.
Even better, join an upcoming online weekly course. See what's coming here.
Hi,
Brian.
I just had to share this
exciting news with you - I just got off a Zoom call with Olga Filina, of 5
Otter Literary, and along with my co-author, we will be receiving a contract
tomorrow for her representation for A is for Ancestor … an Indigenous
alphabet about the Ojibwe culture.
She said she loves you!
And we talked about Kristy, too. (That’s Kristy Jackson, author of Mortified – see here.)
I sent out my book
proposal on June 25th and she responded 4 days later!
THX for all of your
suggestions in moving the idea forward.
And Happy Canada Day!!!
Cheers,
Sue Kelly

information about submitting to Olga at 5 Otter
Literary, see here.
