Buy books ~ from book stores

Heather Risman

Update June 4, 2020: The shutdown of retail stores did go on longer than a couple weeks and Indigo did have to lay off staff. But now, along with other bookstores and other retail outlets, Indigo and Chapters stores are again open  for in-person shopping in Ontario. Hurray!

So get out there and visit your local book store - or if you need to take extra precautions against infection, most bookstores are delivering or providing curbside pickup. Check out the list below.

April 11, 2020. Despite clearly being an essential service, bookstores have needed to close during the current plague, but many of them deliver or offer curbside pickup! And if you want these stores to still be around when things get back to normal, order from them, not from Amazon.

Penguin Random House Canada offers a handy list of independent bookstores across Canada that you can order from. I’ve pasted in the list for Ontario below. To see the list for all of Canada, see here.

Indigo/Chapters also delivers books. Classy lady that she is, CEO Heather Reisman is continuing to pay employees during the shutdown. “Reading is fundamental to the soul,” she added in a March 23 with The Toronto Star.  Regarding Indigo, she said: “When we close 200 stores it has a very significant impact on the company.”

She expects stores will have to stay closed longer than initially planned, and is also expecting a need for substantial government assistance: “If it did go on for a couple of months the only response is a massive injection of cash into the system by the federal and provincial governments. When you do make those decisions, the key is to make decisions that work, so if you do too little you dissipate the funds and you don’t advance the economy."
