Paying markets for you short fiction, poetry, and essays

The Antigonish Review bills itself as a small magazine with an international reputation. It seeks and pays for Poetry $5 per page to a maximum $25; Fiction $50; Articles and Essays $50; Book Reviews $50; and Cover Art $100.

The Malahat Review has four contests for poetry, short fiction, long poems, novellas, and nonfiction.

Open Season Awards is currently open for submission. It has three categories: poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. The winner in each category receives a $2,000 prize. Entry fee $35 (for Canadian entries).

The Malahat Review also accepts regular submissions year-round. They want poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction, mostly by Canadian writers, and reviews of Canadian books of the best writing from abroad. Pays $65 per published page.

Story Quarterly the literary quarterly of Rutgers University -Camden is looking for previously unpublished literary fiction, including short stories, short shorts, and novel excerpts up to 6,250 words in length, and creative nonfiction. We select work on the basis of style, craft, freshness, and vision.

All work must be submitted electronically through Submittable. Information about their current submissions status (open/closed) is also posted on their Submittable page.

Pays $25.

Story Quarterly also runs annual fiction and nonfiction contests. The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up of each contest are published in the issue, and the winner receives a prize of $500.

Submission periods:

General Nonfiction Submissions: Saturday, July 31 – Sunday, October 17, 2021
Ninth Annual Fiction Contest: Saturday, August 28 – Sunday, November 7, 2021
General Fiction Submissions: Saturday, October 16 – Sunday, December 19, 2021

The Queen's Quarterly seeks submissions on any topic that presents a novel perspective and point of departure for thinking about our contemporary world. Whether fiction or non-fiction, a premium will be placed on singularity of voice, accessibility of ideas and relevance to issues of common concern. Honoraria are paid, editorial services are provided and the chance to kick-start a national conversation is on offer.  

Queen’s Quarterly seeks unpublished articles, essays, reviews, short stories and poetry. For poetry and fiction, we will consider up to six poems or two stories.

Submissions are limited to a maximum of 3,000 words and may be simultaneously submitted elsewhere, but not published elsewhere.

Quick Brown Fox Quick Brown Fox welcomes your book reviews and your short stories, poems, and essays about reading, writing, favourite books, and libraries. Read a few essays on the blog to get a taste of what other writers have done (see here and scroll down).

Quick Brown Fox also welcomes reviews of any kind and of anything, anywhere or anybody. If you want to review your favourite coffee shops or libraries, babysitters or lovers (no real names please), go for it.
