Scholastic Canada publishes recreational reading for children and
young people. Its publishing focus is on books by Canadians or of Canadian
interest. M.R. (Robbie) Robinson founded
the original Scholastic company in 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Incorporated
in 1957, Scholastic Canada Ltd. was the first of an international family of
companies that now includes members in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New
Zealand, India and Asia.
Scholastic Canada has its
own editorial and acquisitions office. They do not usually accept un-agented
manuscripts, unless you’ve heard one of their editors speak at a workshop. Anne
Shone, Executive Editor of Scholastic Canada, will be the guest speaker at the
online “Writing for Children & for Young
Adults” workshop on Saturday, October 2,
(see here).
So don’t miss it!
Beyond that, Scholastic is
currently interested in reviewing unpublished material by writers from
underrepresented communities, including Black writers, Indigenous writers,
writers of colour, writers with disabilities, LGBTQIA2S+ writers and writers
who identify with other marginalized groups. Email these submissions to: submissions@scholastic.ca
- For picture books, submit full manuscript. No illustrations
necessary.
- For junior, middle-grade and YA fiction, submit an outline and
three consecutive sample chapters.
- For nonfiction, submit outline and writing sample.
- Do not submit original illustrations or other materials.
- Please allow up to three months for a response. If you have not
heard from us within that time frame, you can assume we are not able to
move forward with your project.
Also, Scholastic Canada welcomes
submissions from professional illustrators interested in working with
Scholastic. They’re invited to email sample art and links to an online
portfolio to Andrea Casault at acasault@scholastic.ca
