Guernica Editions was founded in Montreal in 1978 by writer and filmmaker Antonio D'Alfonso with the expressed mission to publish books that address social justice issues, discover and cultivate our innate humanity, and transcend individual cultures and nations.

n 1991, Guernica’s head office was moved to Ontario where. In 2010, writers Michael Mirolla and Connie Guzzo-McParland took over the reins from Antonio D’Alfonso, maintaining the same original commitment of tearing down borders and creating ties between cultural and social groups. Since its founding, Guernica Editions has published over six hundred titles. 

Guernica seeks out books that are fresh, terse, edgy and self-aware; that dare to cross boundaries and that speak to readers on a universal level.

MiroLand

Created in 2013 under the management of Michael Mirolla and Connie Guzzo-McParland, MiroLand is an imprint for more commercial projects. Since its inception, MiroLand has published genre literature, including mysteries, thrillers, speculative fiction and fantasy, cookbooks, self-help and how-to’s, memoirs, political nonfiction, YA and children’s books, self-help books and more.

Guernica World Editions

Guernica World Editions is for authors outside of Canada’s borders. To date, Guernica has published authors from the US, the UK, France, Israel, Dubai, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, and many other countries across the world.

Guernica will only accept manuscript queries by email. Please send manuscripts as Word documents (.doc or .docx) to michaelmirolla@guernicaeditions.com

The manuscripts should be single-spaced, in a 12-point easy-to-read type. If at all possible, please give the manuscripts a name that includes the title and the author: The Dubliners, James Joyce.

Please note: Guernica is not accepting nonfiction submissions for the 2026 submissions period. 

1366 Books

1366Books is home to works of accessible yet innovative and experimental fiction – works that challenge the conventions of narrative and form, and perhaps even challenge the conventions of the sentence or the page itself. 1366Books seeks to explode readers’ expectations and explore the possibilities of the novel and the short story.

They welcome manuscripts that meet the above criteria by all Canadian writers, including writers of colour, Indigenous writers, LGBTQ+ writers, writers with disabilities, and others who identify as part of marginalized groups.

Manuscripts should be about 20,000 to 40,000 words.

The Guernica Prize for Literary Fiction

Now open for submissions!

The Guernica Prize recognizes the best literary fiction novel that pushes boundaries and is cutting edge. Each entry must be an unpublished novel of at least 40,000 words. A $50 entry fee (online submission through Submittable only) must accompany each submission. Authors may submit more than one manuscript but each manuscript must include a separate entry fee. The name of the author or anything identifying the author should appear nowhere in the manuscript.

The prize consists of $1,000 and a publication contract with Guernica Editions. The winning author agrees to publication with Guernica. Please name your file your manuscript title or the first three words of the manuscript title if the title is longer than three words.

The Guernica Prize is open to Canadian citizens and/or residents of Canada only. Please note that submissions to the prize are final. If a submission is retracted, there is no refund of the entry fee.

Linda Leith Publishing is a Montreal house specializing in literary fiction and nonfiction written in English or translated into English. Their books in French are published by Linda Leith Éditions.

“We have a special love of short books. We like edgy subjects and original voices. What we love most are good books that might not see the light of day if it were not for Linda Leith Publishing.”

They’re seeking submissions on a variety of topics of current and lasting interest from Canadian writers or permanent residents of diverse regions and backgrounds. Like everyone else, they particularly invite submissions form “culturally diverse writers, Indigenous writers, LGBTQ+ writers, and other marginal and minority voices from across Canada.”

LLP is currently considering new literary fiction and nonfiction titles in English and in translation for publication in 2024 and beyond.

For fiction, they’re looking for both novels and novellas, 25,000–80,000 words.

For their Singles series, LLP is looking for essays and other literary nonfiction 20,000–40,000 words, though they’ll also consider longer nonfiction.  

For Young Adult books, they’re looking for the same “freshness, compassion, and intelligence that intrigues us in books for adults.”

Wyldblood Press publishes speculative and literary fiction, both novels and novellas, and short fiction for posting on their website and for Wlydbood Magazine. They are looking for flash fiction between 250-750 words and short stories between 2,500-8,000 words {firm word counts}. Pays £0.01 per word.

Currently, they are closed to submissions for long-form works, but in the new year, they will re-open for works 50,000–100,000 words. They publish in print and electronic format and pay on a royalties-only basis {i.e., no advances}.

Gypsum Sound Tales is an Australian publisher based in Sydney and specializing in short stories and novellas. They regularly publish two anthologies: Colp and Thuggish Itch. 

Colp is currently seeking short fiction (1,000–5,500 words) on the theme “Underground.” Any genre welcome. Pays AU$5 for stories under 2,500 words; AU$10 for longer stories.

Wild Roof Journal seeks poetry, short fiction (1,000–3,000 words), flash fiction (under 1,000 words), creative nonfiction and essays (not more than 3,000 words). Also seeks visual art. Currently accepting free submissions of flash fiction, poetry, and visual art. Generally charges $3.50 for submissions or $25 for editor reviews and feedback.

Announces the Fourth Annual Pottersfield Prize for Creative Nonfiction

Pottersfield Press is once again looking for submissions from writers who can provide a manuscript of 30,000 to 150,000 words in any of the following categories: history, memoir, autobiography, biography, literary journalism, political or social commentary, travel writing or virtually any existing or new category that uses the nonfiction medium to tell a story or put forward an idea.

In 2020, the winning entry was No Thanks, I Want to Walk: Two Months on Foot Around New Brunswick and the Gaspé by Emily Taylor Smith about her long-distance trek of self-discovery and adventure. Second place went to Luc Desroches for his most timely manuscript, Working From Home for a Harmonious Life. Both are slated for publication this year.

{In 2019, Jennifer M. Smith won first place in this contest with Green Ghost, Blue Ocean. Many readers will know Jennifer because they’ve been in classes with her or because she’s been a guest speaker for a class. ~Brian}

The First Prize winner will receive a contract for the publication of the winning book along with a $1,500 advance on 10% royalty for all sales.

The Second Prize winner will also see the publication of the book and a $1,000 advance on 10% royalties.

Deadline is March 31, 2021 but early submissions are encouraged.

Quick Brown Fox Quick Brown Fox welcomes your short stories, poems, and essays about reading, writing, favourite books, and libraries. Read a few essays on the blog to get a taste of what other writers have done (see here and scroll down). 

Quick Brown Fox also welcomes book reviews – or any kind of review of anything, of anywhere or of anybody. If you want to review your favourite coffee shops or libraries, babysitters or lovers (no real names please), go for it. Wasaga Beach/Collingwood/Elmvale/Stayner WRITERS WANTED:  Happy New Year Everyone! Are you interested in joining a new Writing Group?  Meetings weekly online, on Tuesdays, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Writers who are beginning or experienced, or somewhere in between.   

Weekly meetings would include a short writing prompt to get the creative juices flowing, a couple of people a week to read their work to the group, and a writing sprint.  Looking for writers who are interested in writing for adult stories about romance, adventure, the most interesting person you've met, or anything else that interests you.
