Jan 20 – March 30 (no class March 16)
Appleby United Church, 4407 Spruce Ave, Burlington, Ontario (Map here.)
The Next Step in Creative Writing will challenge you to take a step up in your writing. Over the ten weeks of classes, you’ll be asked to bring in five pieces of your writing for detailed feedback. All your pieces may be from the same work, such as a novel in progress, or they may be stand alone pieces. You bring whatever you want to work on.
Besides critiquing pieces, the instructor will give short lectures at the start of class, addressing the needs of the group, and in addition to learning how to critique your own work and receiving constructive suggestions about your writing, you’ll discover that the greatest benefits come from seeing how your classmates approach and critique a piece of writing and how they write and re-write. This is a supportive group and a rewarding class.

How to Get Published
Literary agent Rachel Letofsky
An editor & an agent tell all
Saturday, October 17, 2015
10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Mills Hardware Event Space,
95 King Street East, Hamilton, Ontario (Map here)
If you've ever dreamed of becoming a published author, this workshop is for you. We’ll cover everything from getting started to getting an agent, from getting your short pieces published to finding a book publisher, from writing a query letter to writing what the publishers want. Bring your questions. Come and get ready to be published!
Special Option: Participants are invited to bring a draft of a query letter you might use to interest an agent or publisher in your book. You don’t need to bring anything, but if you do, 3 copies could be helpful.
Guest speaker Rachel Letofsky is a literary agent with the Cooke Agency. The Cooke Agency represents literary and commercial fiction (including science fiction, fantasy and crime), narrative-driven nonfiction in the areas of popular culture, science, history, natural history, politics, personal reference and children’s books. Rachel’s tastes are eclectic. In fiction she is looking for everything from literary fiction to ground-breaking and heart-breaking middle grade and YA titles in all genres. She is drawn to works with a whimsical nature or a grounded, gritty edge in equal measure, though in either instance, unforgettable characters and original concepts are a must. In nonfiction, Rachel is looking for narrative-driven memoirs and anything with a high level of quirkiness.
What a previous attendee has to say:

Brian,
My book Algonquin Spring is being released by Dundurn Press on October 10, 2015. It is a follow-up to I Am Algonquin which came out in November of 2013 and part of the Algonquin Quest Series.
The books are about Native Canada during the 1300s pre-contact. Both novels take place in what is now the Ottawa Valley, Newfoundland, the Maritimes, the northern parts of New Hampshire, Vermont, New York state, Gaspe and the Quebec region of the St Lawrence river.
I have two book signings lined up:
Coles Book Store, Chatham,
100 King Street East in the Chatham Mall
on Thursday October 15 from 4 to 6 PM.
And
Novel Idea 156 Princess Street, Kingston
Sunday October 18 from 3 to 5 PM.
Hope to see you there,
Rick Revelle
Note: If you can’t make one of Rick’s book signings, you can buy Algonquin Spring and I Am Algonquin online here.
