New online
literary magazine AndWeWereHungry is
open to entries for their inaugural short fiction contest: the Flying Elephants
Short Story Prize. Grand prize: $2,000. Also seeking other prose (flash
fiction, literary nonfiction, poetry, & essay), photography, and visual
artwork for the debut issue. Theme: “And we were hungry” or “hunger” (open to
interpretation).
Deadline: March
31, 2013. No entry fee.

for the Diana Woods Memorial Award in Creative Nonfiction (US). Submit essays 5,000
words max. Subject: Open. Prize: $250 publication in next issue of Lunch Ticket. All submissions are considered for publication. The reading period for the award will
be February and March for the issue that publishes in June, and August and
September for the issue that publishes in December.

The prize: $1,500
in prizes plus publication in EVENT. EVENT reserves the right to award the
prize money as it sees fit (e.g. two prizes valued at $750, three at
$500, or one at $1000 and one at $500, etc) should the judge so decide.
Published entries will be paid our standard publication payment in addition to
any prize money.
Cost: $34.95
per entry, includes a one-year subscription to EVENT.

be creative non-fiction and must not exceed the 5,000-word limit.
