So this is big news! Erin Silver’s picture book, Sitting Shiva, is on the short list for the TD Canadian
Children's Literature Award. At $50,000, this is the biggest prize in Canada
for children’s authors, twice as big as the Governor General’s Award for Literature
for Young People – think of it as the Giller Prize for Kid Lit.
Yay, Erin!
Sitting Shiva was published by Orca Books and illustrated by Michelle Theodore. It was previously recognized as a Sydney Taylor Honor Book – the Sydney Taylors being the top award in North America for Jewish children’s books.
I’m proud to say that Erin will be one of the guest speakers for our online
Kid Lit course this fall, starting October 2. See here.
You can read more about Sitting Shiva and even buy a copy direct
from the publisher here.
Also on the short list of finalists for the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award:
Berani by Michelle Kadarusman {Pajama Press}
Kunoichi Bunny by Sara Cassidy, illustrated by Braydon Sato {Orca
Books}
Weird Rules to Follow by Kim Spencer {Orca Books}
The Witness Blanket: Truth, Art and Reconciliation by Carey Newman
and Kirstie Hudson {Orca Books}
I can’t help but notice that Orca practically owns the TD short list, with
four out of the five titles – wow!
Also, congratulations to Kathy Kacer. Her middle
grade novel Hidden on the High Wire (which I reviewed
in time for Hanukkah last year, here}
is on the short list for the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for
Young People.
